First in India: PG diploma in health and social gerontology at DU

For those interested in working with the elderly,the Delhi University’s Institute of Home Economics at Hauz Khas Enclave offers a one-year post-graduate diploma in health and social gerontology.

For those interested in working with the elderly,the Delhi University’s Institute of Home Economics (IHE) at Hauz Khas Enclave offers a one-year post-graduate diploma in health and social gerontology.

Introduced for the first time in India,this course offers scientific study of biological,psychological,and sociological phenomena associated with old age and aging.

The course commences its first batch from July this year.

Dr. Yuki Azaad,a faculty member at the IHE,said: “Besides allowing them to work in old age homes,etc,the course also gives the students an opportunity to work with various industries,such as real estate,that take into account the overall requirements of the elderly.”

The eligibility criteria requires students to have completed BA, BSc,BSc (H) in sciences,social sciences or home science or a professional degree in physiotherapy,occupational therapy,nursing with 50 per cent marks in aggregate.

The IHE will admit 25 students in the first batch. Delhi University laws for reservations will apply.

The two-semester diploma course provides an in-depth study of the subject dealing with various aspects of gerontology through nine papers that include policies,programmes and services,health,nutrition,environment and special needs of the older adults.

“It covers clinical,physical,social and environmental requirements of the elderly,” said Dr Seema Puri,who designed the course.

Students can apply for the course after the Delhi University admission process begins on May 28.

How to apply for an undergraduate course in Delhi University?
For courses where the selection is based on the marks secured in the qualifying (10+2) examination,you can apply with a Common Pre-Admission form. The forms can be submitted at any of the admission centres. Courses for which the selection is based on an entrance examination,you will need to contact the respective colleges.

Do I need to fill separate forms for separate colleges?
One Common Pre-Admission form can be used to apply for all courses and colleges of the Delhi University,except in St Stephens,Jesus and Mary College and at colleges where you are applying for sports quota,ECA or if a college holds entrance test for a particular course.

Will the semester system be followed in all DU courses?
The semester system is already being followed in some courses,such as in Bachelors of Mass Media and Mass Communication at Indraprastha College. As per the new University norms,it can also be applicable on all undergraduate science honours courses,but not the arts and commerce courses. The applicability of the semester system,however,is subject to the final decision of the DU board,and will need to be checked on the day of the admission.

I have obtained compartment in one subject in 10+2 exam. Can I take admission in DU?
Yes,you can take provisional admission (provided your marks percentage is in the cut-off list of any college),subject to passing the compartment examination within the stipulated time. If you have been placed in compartment in more than one subject then you are not eligible for admission.
