Agnee is getting ready their second album, and adding scores to some offbeat Bollywood films.

After three boys from Pune kicked out an ‘I’ and included a couple of ‘Es’ to embrace a new moniker,Agnee, the result was Sadho Re,a track that blended Bhakti saint Kabir’s poetry with grunge folk and rock. The video, shot in Varanasi, seemed right out of a Deepa Mehta film and indicated the band’s wide palette of sounds.

After five years, the band, with K Mohan and Koco on guitars and vocals,Varun Venkit on drums and Michael Periera on keys,is back with their second album titled Create With Agnee, that will release on May 15,Agnee’s fifth anniversary. The 10-track album will also be available for free download on the band’s website. “I am not in favour of policing people when it comes to buying music. If it is available for a free download, even I won’t buy an album. Therefore,we have to figure this out,” says Mohan.

The album will stick to the trademark Agnee sound “which is a mix of every sound the band has ever comes across”. The opening track is Aahatein,a popular pop single which is a favourite at most of their gigs followed by the Roadies title track. The album also features a slew of interesting collaborations like Kaise Ho Tum,a soft romantic ballad sung by Shilpa Rao and Mohan, and Jee Le Abhi,an upbeat pop track by former Viva vocalist and VJ Anoushka Manchanda.

“The interesting bit is that we don’t categorise ourselves into a particular genre and feel a tune to make it work. Mohan’s Carnatic classical background merges well with my classic rock style and the result is liked by the audience,” says Koco, who recorded the album in the band’s studio in Pune. The album will be re-mastered at the Yash Raj studio in Mumbai before its release.

Agnee are also looking forward to the release of Gulaab Gang this month,a film by Showmik Sen,for which they have composed several pieces. The band’s film credits will also roll in another Bollywood film,Alaap,by Manish Manikpuri, and the Hindi version of the Hollywood film,Avengers.
