After a successful pilot project at Simon Bolivar Marg, the New Delhi Municipal Council will replace the existing streetlights on 67 city roads with new,energy-efficient lights.
The Rs 34-crore project is part of the civic bodys larger plans of improving streetlighting in its areas, keeping in mind the Commonwealth Games. The stretches where these lights will be installed include Africa Avenue,Tilak Marg,Shanti Marg and Tees January Marg. The USP of the project, say officials,is the fact that it will achieve a degree of energy efficiency much higher then the prescribed norms set by the Delhi government.
Anand Tiwari,Director of Public Relations at NDMC,said that while these lights will not look very different from existing ones, these energy-efficient lights will be designed keeping the specific requirements of the area in mind. The standard design does not suit NDMC due to the presence of dense foliage in areas to be lit, he said.
The civic body thus decided to go in for a design-based tender, wherein interested parties came up with efficient designs keeping in mind the specifications prescribed by the PWD. Philips India Ltd will implement the project.
The NDMC aims to achieve over 45 lux of light, surpassing the government prescribed norm of 35 lux. Around 60,000 poles will be replaced with new and fewer poles. Their length will vary between 9 to 12 m,depending on the width of the road.
The project will be linked through GSM technology, something the NDMC calls SCADA System Control and Data Acquisition which will enable it to control these streetlights through a centralised command.
