Senior AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj Tuesday accused the BJP of using the Enforcement Directorate (ED) as a tool to arrest Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the excise policy case to stop him from participating in campaigning for the Lok Sabha polls.

Addressing a press conference Tuesday, he referred to a press release issued by the ED in which it claimed transactions amounting to approximately Rs 100 crore have taken place.

“Until now, BJP was claiming it to be a scam of thousands of crores, but over time, the ED has revised its statement to confirm transactions of Rs 100 crore… Despite this, it has not presented any evidence of financial transactions in this matter,” he said.

The ED spokesperson had alleged Monday: “ED investigation revealed (BRS leader) Ms K Kavitha along with others conspired with top leaders of AAP including Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia for getting favours in the Delhi excise policy formulation and implementation. In exchange…, she was involved in paying Rs 100 crore to leaders of AAP.”

Referring to an order issued by Justice Sanjeev Khanna of the Supreme Court on October 30, 2023, Bharadwaj said the judge clearly stated that the allegation of a Rs 100 crore transaction by the ED is somewhat a matter of debate, and no evidence or facts have been presented in this regard.

He also accused ED of spreading fake news about the transaction. “It is unfortunate that a probe agency, which should work independently for everyone, spent the entire day yesterday in the central government’s office constructing a negative narrative against political opponents and attempting to defame them,” he added.

Citing Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recent electoral victory, Bharadwaj alleged, “… a similar situation is emerging in our country… Opposition leaders who pose a threat to the ruling BJP… are being arrested… then no one will be left to question the PM, and like Putin and (North Korean leader) Kim Jong Un, the BJP will also win the elections.”
