Ebola preparedness in city’s large hospitals reviewed

As Delhi is a busy transit point, a high level of preparedness is to be maintained for Ebola

Beefing up the Delhi government’s Ebola-preparedness, Delhi chief secretary D M Spolia, on Thursday, directed that all hospitals with more than 500 beds be prepared to provide Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) treatment.

At a high-level meeting with the principal secretary (health), director (health services), superintendents of government hospitals and heads of the health department of the municipal corporations, Spolia reviewed the preparedness measures of Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and Lok Nayak Hospital — which have been identified to treat Ebola cases, if detected.

As Delhi is a busy transit point, a high level of preparedness is to be maintained and all agencies should act in close co-ordination to combat the disease, Spolia said at the meeting.

The chief secretary asked the medical superintendents to impart training to all medical personnel within 15 days.

Also, hospitals identified to treat Ebola are to be made ready by identifying nodal officers, training staff and providing them protective equipment, and readying isolation wards and ICUs, Spolia said.

The standard-operating-procedure laid down by the central government should be followed by all public and private hospitals in Delhi, he further said.
