A brawl broke out outside Delhi University’s Miranda House College when a few students tried to enter the campus forcibly to campaign for the upcoming Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) election which is slated to be held on September 27.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Miranda House College Principal Bijayalaxmi Nanda said, “Whatever happened, has happened outside the gate and it was handled very well by the college election committee, the students’ union and the staff. Many student candidates from the outside were trying to forcibly enter the college campus. We handled the situation and let in about three to four candidates, including women, to proceed with their campaign. The remaining were stopped outside.”

“I received a complaint from a few girl students of our college about indiscipline at the gate. There was no mention of any harassment or about any physical injuries. We have kept the complaints for our record and have sent a copy to the Delhi Police too to keep them into the loop. The entire incident barely lasted for 10 minutes and was quickly resolved by our students and staff,” Nanda added.

Meanwhile, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the National Student Union of India (NSUI) blamed each other for the scuffle.

In its statement the ABVP alleged, “The NSUI Presidential candidate for DUSU, Ronak Khatri, along with NSUI goons forcibly entered Miranda House college by breaking the Gate of the college. The DUSU constitution allows only 4 students along with the DUSU candidate to enter the premises of a college in DU, but the NSUI goons along with Ronak Khatri disregarded the rules and broke the gates of Miranda House college to enter forcefully inside the college”

Responding to this, the NSUI in its statement said, “National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) strongly criticises the recent actions of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) at Miranda House. For NSUI, student welfare and safety for female students is the priority while ABVP resorts to divisive and confrontational politics. Thrashing professors, submitting fake degrees is their reality.”

It added, “Students of Miranda have time and again rejected ABVP’s agenda of hatred. We have seen every year that the girls of Miranda have firmly rejected ABVP’s politics. ABVP doesn’t have the guts to face the students of Miranda.”
