Forced to undertake damage control measures after protests from students on the issue of converting the erstwhile Delhi College of Engineering (DCE) into a state university and being rechristened Delhi Technological University (DTU),officials on Friday blamed the Delhi University (DU) for being on the “wrong foot”.

“The present agitation against the upgrade of the DCE into DTU is largely because of certain misunderstandings created by DU authorities . Delhi Polytechnic earlier and (named) DCE later were only affiliated to DU for the purpose of its academic programmes,” a press statement issued by DTU stated.

The press statement contests the claim that DCE was a constituent college of the Delhi University.

“By no stretch of imagination can either Delhi Polytechnic, the earlier avatar of erstwhile DCE,or DCE itself be considered a constituent institute of DU. It is crystal clear from the original application made by Delhi Polytechnic to DU in 1951,on the basis of which DU had granted affiliation for engineering and architecture programmes,” the press note states.

Pental said DU’s stand on the matter remained unchanged. “It is a complicated matter. I had written to the L-G because I felt proper procedures were not followed in the conversion process,” he said.

The note comes down heavily on DU. “DU failed to innovate and upgrade its (DCE) engineering curriculum for last 30 years… It had no regard for the growth of the education quality in the institution…,” it says.

While claiming that post-conversion DTU had updated its syllabus,it stated,“As such the students already enrolled with DU …continue to be taught the outdated curriculum and will receive the degrees from Delhi University.”

“We do not sit on proposals for syllabus revision once they are sent to us. Why would the Academic Council interfere unnecessarily in an engineering college course?” Pental asked.

On Thursday the DTU had expelled its Students’ Association Presiden Ravi Shekhar and placement coordinator Nitin Baraiya, both final-year BE civil engineering students,“for indulging in indiscipline, disturbing the classes, instigating fellow students, using foul language and disrupting the law and order situation¿” the press note stated.
