The Delhi Skill and Entrepreneurship University (DSEU) administration on Tuesday decided to initiate an inquiry into an incident where the Entrepreneurship and Startups exam paper for final-year Diploma in Electrical Engineering students had answers to the multiple choice questions (MCQs) printed alongside.

More than 300 students appeared for this paper as part of their end-semester exams on July 1 across the varsity’s four campuses.

While Dr Pankaj Shyam Lathar, the Controller of Examination for the university, said the issue came to his notice on the eve of the examination, Ashok Kumar Nagawat, Vice-Chancellor, said the issue was not brought to his notice.

“I will take stock of the situation immediately, this issue was not brought to my notice. I can only apologise to the student union for the inconvenience caused to the students but the marks will be proportionately compensated,” Nagawat said. He added that as the answers for only one section, i.e. MCQs, were revealed, there would be no re-examination.

“This is a rare occurrence because of the non-disciplinary behaviour of the exam setters who are teachers appointed by the Board of Studies. We will initiate an inquiry immediately to rectify and avoid future occurrences,” Nagawat said.

Lathar said after the issue came to his notice, immediate instructions were given to the concerned centre superintendents. “We gave immediate directions to all the centre superintendents to inform the students appearing for examinations not to attempt Question 1 and that multiple choice questions will not be part of the evaluation,” he added.

A student at the Pusa campus said, “We asked those on exam duty but they just smiled at us. No instructions were given…All of us had to attempt all the questions like any normal paper and did not get any update from the university about the paper till date.”

A teacher, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said, “This unfortunate instance has occurred due to the carelessness of the examination conduction team. Students also take these situations for granted and if this goes on, the quality of the students will be affected.”

Meanwhile, the students union Aawaz pointed out multiple discrepancies in the end-semester examinations this year, like repetition of questions, a lack of clarity in instructions on which questions should be attempted etc.
