The doctor who had examined the Uber cab rape victim testified before the trial court on Monday that the injuries on the woman’s neck indicated that there had been an attempt to strangulate her.
During her testimony as a prosecution witness, Dr Kaveri from Bara Hindu Rao hospital told the special fast-track court of ASJ Kaveri Baweja that the woman had scratch marks on her neck which “were suggestive of strangulation”. Dr Kaveri said the woman was brought to her on the evening of December 6 last year for a second medical opinion as she was already examined by another doctor.
Dr Kaveri told the judge that other injuries found on the woman’s body were already mentioned in the medical report prepared by the first doctor.
Another doctor, who had conducted the medical examination of the accused, Shiv Kumar Yadav, on December 8, also told the court that Yadav had sustained multiple scratch marks on his face.
The doctor said the scratch marks appeared to be about two days old, and could have been caused by someone’s fingernails.
The court also recorded the statements of four other witnesses, including Dr Jitendra Nigotia, who had examined Yadav after his arrest, and P N Singh, an official of Sheikh Sarai Transport authority which had issued the driving licence to Yadav.
Witnesses Gaurav Thakral — who had given his mobile handset and SIM card to the accused when they were working in the same company — and Delhi Police Inspector Mahesh Kumar were also examined. The court has now summoned four more witnesses, including three Delhi Police officers, to record their testimonies on Tuesday.
