DJB adds 10 MGD water to reservoirs

With work on the interceptor sewer project set to start by the end of August, the Delhi Jal Board on Monday reported considerable progress in its plan to clean up the Yamuna.

With work on the interceptor sewer project set to start by the end of August, the Delhi Jal Board on Monday reported considerable progress in its plan to clean up the Yamuna. The water utility has also brought out its Summer Action Plan for 2011,claiming to have added another 10 million gallons per day (MGD) to its reservoirs without depending on any additional source of water.

“We hope that the health of the Yamuna will improve by 2015 as the project is expected to be completed in three or three-and-a-half years. Engineer India Limited (EIL),the project management consultants, have submitted their report. Tenders for all the works to be carried out under the interceptor sewer project were opened on Friday, and are in progress. We hope to finish awarding the work by June 30 at a total cost of Rs 1,404 crore,” DJB chief Ramesh Negi said.

Negi said the project would be launched in six areas by six companies. Under the project, sewage water flowing through three big drains into the Yamuna will be treated, and the DJB also proposes to cover all the drains downstream of Wazirabad. “The present effluent discharge into Yamuna comes to 40 BOD (biochemical oxygen demand). It will be brought down to 12 BOD after the completion of the project,” Negi said.

Announcing the water utility’s action plan for summers and with the monsoon just round the corner,Negi said rehabilitation of most trans-sewers would also be finished by June 30. “This time,we expect reduction in the flow of sewage into MCD’s stormwater drains,” he added.

In order to ensure reduction in non-revenue water and the water metering front, the Jal Board installed 1 lakh domestic water meters over the previous year. “There have been a negligible number of complaints and the meters are functioning well. Another order has been placed to procure and install 2.5 lakh domestic water meters under the command of the Sonia Vihar water treatment plant for South and East Delhi. Of these,15,000 meters have been received, and 12,000 have already been installed successfully,“ Negi said.

The DJB has also constructed a 20-million-litre underground reservoir and booster pumping station at Avantika, which will benefit about three lakh residents of Mangolpur Kalan,Vijay Vihar Phase-I & II,Gopal Vihar,Rohini Sector 1 to 4 and adjoining areas.
