Devotees, rain fuel snarls on NH-8

Apart from the kanwariyas, at least four heavy vehicles— three trucks and a bus — broke down between 8 am and 10.30 am, worsening the traffic jams.

The National Highway (NH)-8 saw massive traffic snarls on Thursday morning. Tailgates lasted from up to an hour to four hours.

Traffic police blamed the snarls on part of the highway being out-of-bounds for motorists to allow the procession of kanwariyas (devotees of Lord Shiva), vehicles breaking down because of heavy rain, waterlogging at entry-exit points for vehicles and bad road conditions.

The Delhi-Jaipur stretch of the highway was worst affected.

The tailgates started at around 8 am when motorists were stopped by traffic police to let the kanwariyas pass. Normal movement of vehicles resumed only at around 12.30 pm.

Bumper-to-bumper traffic could be seen at major intersections like Cyber City, Shankar Chowk, IFFCO Chowk, Signature Tower, Rajeev Chowk, MG Road Chowk, Old Delhi Road and Ghata Chowk.

The snarls spilled on to the arterial roads, including MG Road, Sector 29 road, Cyber City road, Sector 15 road and Udyog Vihar road.

Kanwariyas will pass the NH-8 till August 12, Shivratri, a senior traffic police officer said.

However, following Thursday’s snarls, the highway authorities plan to rework the route plan of the kanwariyas.
