Lit up in the colours of the national flag, the 166-metre-high chimney tower at Rajghat power plant could be seen for miles ahead on Friday. It was inaugurated by Delhi L-G VK Saxena.

Joining the ranks of South Delhi’s Qutub Minar and North/West Delhi’s Pitampura TV Tower, the chimney is the tallest illuminated structure in the city. According to official sources, the aim of the project was to create a distinctive landmark for Central/East Delhi.

Commissioned in 1989, the coal-based plant, spanning 28 acres, was decommissioned in 2015 due to pollution concerns. Seen as an eyesore for over eight years, plans to demolish the chimney were reconsidered to avoid substantial costs, prevent dust pollution, and minimise contributions to the city’s construction and demolition waste, said officials. The L-G’s visit to the power plant in February prompted a shift in plans.

Under the Lt-Governor’s guidance, meetings at Raj Niwas resulted in the decision to repurpose the Rajghat Power House, showcasing the power generation process through an immersive 5D experience for the public, blending information and entertainment.

Contrasting with the recently illuminated 72.5-metre-high Qutub Minar, the Rajghat power plant chimney towers over 2.2 times the height of the iconic structure. The successful illumination of the chimney tower now hopes to be a significant addition to the capital’s skyline.

There are future plans regarding the power plant that are to be opened up subsequently, through refurbishment and adaptive reuse/repurposing of the power plant precinct, said officials.
