Livewire monkeys
Large parts of ITO and its adjoining areas plunged into darkness for nearly 30 minutes on Friday evening. While most people may have passed it off as yet another incident of load-shedding,that was not the case. Having wreaked havoc near hospitals and schools, the Capitals monkeys have now taken to hanging out near transformers.
It was one such monkey that knocked off the connection for 30 minutes on Friday.
Talking it out
After the much-talked about partnership between Fortis Hospital and the Delhi government turned out to be a damp squib, the state government is now hoping that if nothing else, the spirit of partnership will make the deal successful. Were hoping there will be no need to approach an ombudsman to settle the dispute. Both parties are trying to patch things up. Weve tried to explain to them the benefit of partnerships and since both parties are now willing to talk,we hope to find an early solution to the stalemate, said a senior Delhi government hospital officer.
Despite an increasing number of PILs and suo motu activity in the Delhi High Court,Chief Justice A P Shah last week had to point out to an earnest and hopeful litigant that even courts have their limitations. The litigant had sought the courts intervention in containing pricerise. Madam, please understand this,we do not have a magic wand. How can the court control rising prices? asked Justice Shah,as the petitioner tried to argue how important it was for the judges to intervene. Left with no option under the law,Justice Shah dismissed her petition but refrained from imposing a cost on her for moving a meritless plea, observing she appeared to be a person really concerned with the prices.
Cops and robbers
Lawlessness in Ghaziabad has reached a point where criminals have begun threatening circle officers. In a shocking incident,a criminal recently called up the circle officer in Ghaziabad and threatened him with dire consequences if he did not call off the manhunt for the former. As the criminal is a history-sheeter,the police had been on his trail for quite some time, but he managed to escape every time.
U-turn
After the Municipal Corporation of Delhi top brass recently landed in a soup after prematurely acknowledging that the corporation had thousands of bogus employees, officials are using every possible excuse to save face. We were proved wrong but the good thing is that it means that all the employees are actually reporting to work, an official said. When I joined office a few years ago,the media said that most employees did not report to work. But now, after we began the biometric system of attendance, the same media wrote that employees were coming to work on time and hence, also finding the time for yoga in the Town Hall lawns before beginning work, he said.
Going by the book
Delhi Traffic Police have a new Joint Commissioner of Police,Satyendra Garg. Since the top cop is known for his intolerance for unlawful activities, the department has been on its toes since Garg joined. And proving them right,on the very first day that he assumed charge,he began a crackdown on illegal parking, beginning from his very own office. He got his staff to remove a car parked at a non-parking spot at the headquarters.
All in jest
While Kalmadi and company are often criticised for the lack of preparation for the Commonwealth Games, rarely is it done in a public forum in the presence of senior bureaucrats and politicians. At a recent launch, where the Chief Minister was in attendance, adman Suhel Seth commented that with Kalmadi on one side and M S Gill on the other,it would be hard to get anything done, including the kabbadi stadium. As politically incorrect as Seths statements were,Dikshit could hardly restrain from smiling as Seth kept poking fun at the two.
