Police sources said he has been arrested in the alleged fake degree case. An FIR was registered against him last
night.
He has been charged under various IPC sections including 420 (cheating). A police team had gone to Bihar on the direction of court to investigate charges that he had used fake degrees.
Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi refused to respond to queries on the arrest. “I was in a meeting and I will seek details of his arrest before commenting,” Bassi said.
The BJP had in the past alleged that Tomar’s undergraduate certificate from the Bhagalpur University in Bihar were “fake and forged”. Tomar, however, dismissed the charges against him as “baseless” and said that it is a political conspiracy by the BJP.
On May 9, the Bar Council of Delhi (BCD) had sent a complaint against Tomar to the Delhi Police for inquiry into the authenticity of the certificates submitted by Tomar at the time of his enrollment.
The Council had given one “last opportunity” to Tomar to submit the original certificates of his undergraduate and postgraduate studies and LLB by May 27. Tomar’s advocate had sought time till July to file the certificates, but the BCD declined his request.
