Days after a 59-year-old assistant engineer with Delhi Jal Board (DJB) was killed in a robbery in the Capital’s Rohini, the police Wednesday arrested a man who had met him a few days before the crime and confessed to his involvement in the murder.
According to the Delhi Police, their investigations revealed that Bunty had become acquainted with Suresh Rathi a few days ago, and planned to rob him after he saw him wearing several gold chains. He murdered Rathi before fleeing with the victim’s jewellery and cash on October 31, they added.
Following the registration of a murder case, multiple dedicated teams were formed to look for the killer. The teams examined CCTV footage near the deceased’s residence, made an intensive local inquiry, and leveraged technical surveillance and human inputs.
The police spotted him in a black hoodie entering a locality in Vikaspuri, and managed to nab him from his woman friend’s house. They said Bunty is involved in three previous criminal cases.
“The police recovered all the robbed articles and jewellery, including cash. Additionally, the two mobile phones and a scooty used in the crime have also been recovered,” a senior police officer said.
According to the police, they received a PCR call on November 2 at the Begumpur Police Station at around 3.30 pm from the victim’s son, Ankur Rathi, who reported that his father had been killed.
When the local police reached the spot, they found the body in the bathroom of his flat with a stab wound on the right side of the neck. The crime and forensic teams were called for inspection, and the body was later shifted to SGM Hospital for post-mortem examination.
“The scene of the crime is situated on the first floor of the said building. The deceased used to visit the said flat occasionally, while his permanent residence was at Sector 24 in Rohini,” said Rajeev Ranjan, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Rohini.
The family initially did not think anything was amiss as the victim sometimes stayed at the other flat. The victim’s daughter worked as a major in the National Security Guard (NSG).
“The PCR caller informed that his father had not come home for the past two days and was not responding to phone calls. Therefore, he came to the said flat, which was found to be locked. He brought the keys from his residence and, upon opening the door, found his father lying dead inside,” Ranjan said.
A case under Section 103(1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was registered at the Begumpur Police Station.
