Although crime rates in the national capital have generally declined, cases related to drugs and their supply have consistently risen over the past decade, according to data from the Delhi police.

In 2024, the national capital experienced a 35 per cent increase in cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, compared to 2023. This surge is attributed to the Lieutenant Governor’s office, which has placed a special emphasis on combating issues related to psychotropic substances. Data shared by the Delhi Police indicates that this trend is consistent with the past decade, as there has been a year-on-year rise in NDPS cases since 2015.

“Foreign cartels are now also getting involved in drug processing in Delhi. That has led to more seizures and raids throughout the year,” a senior Crime Branch official said. The Crime Branch unit also busted several ‘in-house’ drug processing units across Delhi in 2024, with an officer claiming many of them involved foreign nationals.

In October 2024, the Delhi Police Special Cell made one of the largest drug seizures in recent years by recovering 1,289 kg of cocaine from locations in Delhi and Gujarat. This operation targeted a cartel allegedly led by Dubai-based businessman Virendra Basoiya. Police officers stated that the drugs originated in South America, primarily Colombia, and were transported via Dubai on cargo ships. The cocaine was intended for distribution across Delhi and Mumbai.

In 2024, there was a 13.45 per cent increase in cases registered under all acts, continuing the trend established by the NDPS Act. However, during the same period, cases registered for crimes covered by the Indian Penal Code experienced a decline of 15.05 per cent.

Heinous crimes such as rape and murder have shown a slight drop, according to data from the Delhi Police.
