Delhi News Live Updates, May 6, 2025: The Delhi Lieutenant-Governor is set to hold a key meeting at 4 pm on Tuesday to discuss mock drills as the national Capital prepares for contingency in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 people, mostly tourists, last month. A day earlier, the Centre directed northern and western states and Union Territories to test and strengthen civil defence mechanisms in the event of a hostile attack. The mock drill, scheduled to be conducted on May 7, will entail operationalising air raid warning sirens, implementing crash blackout measures in selected areas and train civilians, including students, on safety protocols to follow during an aerial or ground assault.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Excise department has directed all hotels, clubs, and restaurants (HCR) licensees who have not submitted Police Clearance Certificates (PCCs) to submit them within five days. Officials said necessary action will be taken against those who do not submit their data as per the Delhi Excise Act and Rules. There are around 900 hotels, clubs, and restaurants in different parts of the city that serve liquor to their customers.

Civilians have been advised to familiarise themselves with the sounds of the air-raid siren, including long wails for alerts and short bursts for all-clear, identifying nearest shelter locations such as basements, underground car parks or designated safe zones and keep ready items such as a torch, emergency kit and water bottles, among others. — PTI

Delhi News Live Updates: Woman dies by suicide in Delhi's Rohini over live-in partner's marriage

A 24-year-old woman, said to be depressed by her live-in partner marrying another woman, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her house in Rohini area, police said on Tuesday.

The incident occurred on April 30 in the northwest Delhi's Vijay Vihar area, they said.

A caller informed police that the woman, whose identity was withheld, had not opened the door of her house since the previous night. Police arrived, broke down the door and found the woman hanging from a ceiling fan in her flat.

She was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead. — PTI

Delhi News Live Updates: Delhi: PWD to identify new waterlogging spots in coordination with MLAs

To address waterlogging issues across the city, the Public Works Department (PWD) has ordered its officials to identify low-lying areas and waterlogging spots in consultation with local MLAs.

According to the order made public on Tuesday, the department has directed its divisions to take the required corrective measures by May end and submit an action-taken report to the PWD secretary.

These spots, if identified, will be in addition to the ones that have already been identified by the traffic police and other authorities in the past.

"During high-level meetings convened under the chairpersonship of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, it was observed that waterlogging situations have arisen in the past at some other locations and low-lying areas also, which are not included in the list of waterlogging locations observed during the past two years as conveyed by the Delhi Traffic Police," reads the order. — PTI

A Delhi court has sentenced a man to 12 years in jail for raping a 16-year-old girl with intellectual disability and said sexual abuse of children was a "crime against humanity and society".

Additional sessions judge Susheel Bala Dagar was hearing the arguments on sentencing against the 29-year-old man, who was convicted in the 2018 case for rape under IPC and Section 6 (aggravated penetrative sexual assault) of the POCSO Act.

Additional public prosecutor Yogita Kaushik Dahiya argued the convict deserved no leniency for he sexually assaulted a girl with an intelligence quotient of a six-year-old child. — PTI

Delhi News Live Updates: Delhi man serving life sentence arrested two years after jumping parole

A 51-year-old Delhi man serving a life sentence in a rape and murder case was arrested two years after jumping parole, police said on Tuesday.

Shakurpur resident Ramesh was lodged in Mandoli jail when he was granted a three-week parole by a court. However, instead of surrendering after the parole period, he absconded, they said.

"A team was formed and he was located in Shakurpur, from where he was arrested," the police said.

A further investigation is underway to determine his activities during the time he was absconding. PTI

Delhi Water Minister Parvesh Verma on Tuesday accused the AAP-led Punjab government of indulging in a "conspiracy" to deprive the national capital of its due share of water.

He said that Delhi's supply has been continuously reduced in the past six days — first by 88 cusecs on May 1 and then by 130 cusecs on May 5.

"It is the Punjab government's conspiracy to deprive Delhi of its share of water. They are doing dirty politics over water supply to take revenge on the people of Delhi for electoral losses of AAP in February," Verma said in a statement. — PTI

Delhi News Live Updates: Delhi HC seeks AAP MLA's response on plea against anticipatory bail

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday sought the response of AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan on a plea challenging his anticipatory bail in an alleged case of attack on cops in Jamia Nagar in the capital.

Justice Ravinder Dudeja issued notice on Delhi Police's plea against the relief granted by the trial court on February 25.

The MLA from Okhla was booked on February 10 for allegedly leading a mob and aiding a proclaimed offender, who was accused in an attempt-to-murder case, to escape from custody.

The incident, police said, occurred when Delhi Police's Crime Branch attempted to arrest Shahwez Khan.

The police counsel said the trial court erred in granting the relief to Khan without considering the test applied in such cases, especially when there were 26 cases pending against the lawmaker. — PTI

Security has been heightened in the national capital ahead of mock drills scheduled to be conducted on Wednesday, following a directive of the Union Home Ministry in light of the rising Indo-Pak tensions after the Pahalgam terror attack.

Police have increased day and night patrolling across different areas in the city with a special focus on tourist and market places. Special patrol units have been mobilised to cover key areas, including Connaught Place, India Gate, Janpath, Yashwant Palace, Gole Market and other vital installations.

Toilets clogged on Air India flight again; aircraft diverted to Frankfurt

An Air India flight from Toronto to Delhi was diverted to Frankfurt mid-journey last week due to an unknown number of its toilets being clogged, The Indian Express has learnt.

This incident comes two months after an Air India flight from Chicago to Delhi returned to its origin airport due to eight out of 12 of its toilets being clogged.

“Air India flight AI188 of 02 May 2025, operating non-stop from Toronto to Delhi, was diverted to Frankfurt due to a technical issue,” an Air India spokesperson said. “The flight was airborne from Frankfurt within a couple of hours and proceeded to its destination, Delhi. We would like to reiterate that at Air India, the safety and well-being of our customers and crew remain top priority,” the spokesperson added.

Delhi HC stays interim injunction against PS-2 song ‘Veera Raja Veera’ use by AR Rahman

The Delhi High Court Tuesday stayed an interim injunction against music director A R Rahman and two production companies, under which Rahman and Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions were directed to credit celebrated Dhrupad exponents, the late Ustad Nasir Faiyazuddin and Ustad Nasir Zahiruddin Dagar, in a song in Ponniyin Selvan-2 (PS-2).

An appeal was filed by Rahman against a single judge’s order on April 25, and was taken up by the division bench of Justices C Hari Shankar and Ajay Digpaul.

The single judge order had held that Rahman’s popular composition Veera Raja Veera from the film PS-2 was musically “identical” to Shiva Stuti, a devotional piece composed and performed by Junior Dagar Brothers.

Delhi High Court seeks AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan’s response in plea seeking cancellation of anticipatory bail

The Delhi High Court Tuesday sought a response from Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Okhla MLA Amanatullah Khan in a plea by the state seeking to set aside the anticipatory bail granted to him by a trial court in February.

He has been accused of attacking police personnel and obstructing them from arresting an alleged proclaimed offender, Shahwez Khan, who was already on anticipatory bail granted by a court.

Justice Ravinder Dudeja issued notice and kept the matter for consideration on August 27.

No more flight delays at Delhi airport expected as runway reopens

Runway 10/28 at the Delhi airport, which was temporarily shut down for almost a month, reopened for operations Tuesday, an airport source told The Indian Express.

The Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL)-operated Indira Gandhi International Airport shut down the runway on April 9 for upgradation work. The original plan was to reopen it in July after it had been made capable of handling low-visibility operations from both ends.

"As per standard procedure, the DGCA will soon conduct a detailed inspection and regular flight operations are expected to resume soon. As per approved plan, Runway 28/10 will be closed again from mid-June to mid-Sep' 25, following the peak tourist season, when wind direction is also expected to shift," the Delhi airport said in a post on X Monday.

Delhi: Students spray fire extinguisher at man, beat him up

A 23-year-old man was beaten by a group of school students in Mayur Vihar after he confronted them for spraying a fire extinguisher into his eyes, a police officer said. 

An FIR was registered based on the statement of the complainant.

According to the FIR, on April 30, the complainant, Nitin Kumar went to pick up his nephew from school when he saw a group of students playing with a fire extinguisher and spraying it in the air. While they were doing so, the spray fell into Nitin's eyes, and he confronted them. 

According to Nitin, the students told him that he didn't know who they were, and there could be consequences for him if he spoke up. 

Nitin alleged to the police that after that, a group of 6-7 students stopped his scooter and started beating him up. The students then fled from the scene.

Nitin then went to the Lal Bahadur Shastri hospital, where his medico-legal case report confirmed chest injuries.

Man electrocuted in Greater Kailash

A 45-year-old labourer was electrocuted while cutting iron rods using a machine in Delhi’s Greater Kailash area, the Delhi Police said. 

According to the police, the incident took place around 1.30 pm on Monday when the deceased, Shankar Mandal from Bihar, was working at the GK house. He was rushed to Safdarjung Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.


The body has now been shifted to the mortuary for post-mortem proceedings. Police said while cutting the rods, Mandal touched a wire and got electrocuted. Statements of his co-workers have been recorded and a case has been registered under sections 289 and 106(1) of the BNS, the police said.

Delhi Mayor lays foundation stone for senior citizens’ recreation centre

Delhi Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh Monday laid the foundation stone of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s (MCD) senior citizens’ recreation centre that will function as a dedicated space for the elderly.

A bhoomi pujan was held in the presence of Union Minister of State and East Delhi MP Harsh Malhotra and Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva. 

Speaking on the occasion, Sachdeva said, “Our elders are our greatest assets, and it is the responsibility not just of individual families, but of society as a whole, to ensure they are respected and included in the mainstream.”

Malhotra said, “Senior citizens are vital carriers of wisdom and social dialogue. This centre will give them a space to sit together, talk, laugh, and feel a sense of belonging.”

Singh also announced that the corporation is committed to building more such facilities in the future. “We will strive to ensure that recreation centres for both the elderly and women are set up in all 250 municipal wards of Delhi,” he said.

The facility will include seating areas, a library, indoor games, entertainment facilities, an open space and a toilet block.

Delhi govt asks hotels, clubs, restaurants with excise license to get police clearance within 5 days

The Delhi Excise department has directed all hotels, clubs, and restaurants (HCR) licensees who have not submitted Police Clearance Certificates (PCCs) to submit them within five days.

"It has been observed that several HCR licenses have not submitted PCCs — which are mandatory to be submitted within 30 days of issuance of licences under Section 13 of the Delhi Excise Act, 2009 — despite an earlier circular dated 27.02.2025 issued in the matter. Therefore, all HCR licensees who have not submitted PCCs to date are directed to submit them within five days,” read an order issued by the Excise Department.

Officials said necessary action will be taken against those who do not submit their data as per the Delhi Excise Act and Rules.

Delhi News Live Updates: NEET-UG 2025 | Noida STF arrests 3 Delhi residents for demanding money from medical aspirants, their families

The Special Task Force (STF) of the Uttar Pradesh Police on Saturday arrested three people for allegedly offering National Eligibility cum Entrance Test – Undergraduate (NEET-UG) candidates help to crack the examination through unfair means in exchange for money.

According to an official statement issued by the Noida unit of the STF on Sunday, the three accused have been identified as Vikram Kumar Shah, Aniket Kumar, and Dharampal Singh. Shah and Kumar are residents of Lakshmi Nagar in Delhi, whereas Singh stays in the Sagarpur area of the national capital.

The police said the accused were arrested based on a tip-off, and the three of them ran an office in Noida’s Sector-3.

“On Saturday, we received a tipoff from informants that some suspects were calling relatives of NEET aspirants and offering them deals to pass the test. We then raided the office in Sector-3 at night and arrested the three men and also seized 10 mobile phones, an Apple MacBook, credit, PAN, and Aadhaar cards, examination ID cards, a Fortuner car, and data sheets of candidates from their possession,” said the police. Delhi News Live Updates: ‘Throw the last ball again’: Comment that led to 19-year-old being beaten to death during cricket match in Bulandshahr

A 19-year-old man was beaten to death with a bat in Bulandshahr’s Rasoolpur village following an argument during a cricket match on Sunday, police said.

According to the police, the argument began after the victim, Shakti Bhati, who was batting, said the last ball in the match was a wide ball and requested it be thrown again. “Throw the last ball again,” he said. Soon he was hit by the bat on his neck and fell to the ground.

He was taken to a private hospital in Unchagaon, where the doctor declared him dead, according to the police.

Delhi News Live Updates | ‘Our families depend on us’: Amid mohalla clinics’ transition, doctors left in limbo. Here’s what the health minister said

On March 31, the contract of doctors and staffers at Delhi’s mohalla clinics, set up by the previous AAP regime, expired. A month on, with the new BJP government deciding to convert mohalla clinics into Urban Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (UAAMs) under the Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM), they now stare at an uncertain future.

According to the doctors, the government has yet to inform them if and when they plan to transfer them to the Arogya Mandirs.

Recently, around 2,000 doctors and staffers working at mohalla clinics – under the platform of the newly-formed Delhi Welfare Ayushman Arogya Mandir association – met Chief Minister Rekha Gupta to express their concerns.

The doctors requested that they be brought under the ambit of the National Health Mission (NHM), which covers staffers working at Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, to be eligible for benefits such as paid leave and health insurance, among others. Read

Gujarat man arrested for breaking into Seema Haider’s house: ‘she and Sachin Meena are conducting occult practices on me’

The Greater Noida police Saturday arrested a 35-year-old man for allegedly trespassing on the house of Seema Haider, the Pakistani national who had illegally entered India through Nepal borders with her children to be with her Indian partner in the city in 2023.

Ritu Devi, mother-in-law of Haider, filed the First Information Report (FIR) at the Rabupura Police Station, alleging that an unidentified man tried to forcefully enter her house Saturday. “He started screaming about being unable to open the door. Everyone, including children, inside the house got scared and the police were alerted,” she said.

“We arrested Tejas Jani, a resident of Surendranagar in Gujarat. We suspect that he is suffering from some mental illness,” read a statement issued by the Noida Police.The police also said the man was arrested by the constables deployed outside Haider’s house after threats were made to her on social media following the Pahalgam terror attack.

Two days after the Delhi High Court refused to stay the demolition of encroachments around the Taimoor Nagar drain and attributed the flooding in various parts of the capital, including in South Delhi, the authorities conducted the demolitions early Monday.

This court attributed the flooding, after showers and thunderstorms in the Capital, to the inability of the drain to discharge rainwater downstream due to the encroachments.

The court granted a one-time extension to the 14 applicants who requested 10 days to vacate and permitted them to move out by Tuesday (May 6) evening.

Woman’s body found in suitcase on Gurgaon-Faridabad Road, police list several tattoos in bid to determine her identity

The Gurgaon police Saturday recovered the body of an unidentified woman aged around 35 from an abandoned black suitcase near Shiv Nadar School on the Gurgaon-Faridabad road.

The police said the body was found in an open area slightly off the footpath following a tip-off. Police teams, including dog squad units, inspected the site, and the Sushant Lok police station lodged an FIR.

Preliminary investigations suggest the body was brought from another location and dumped at the site, a police spokesperson said.

25 adjournments in 10 months: Why is the Delhi excise policy case stuck?

The trial into the corruption case linked to the alleged Delhi excise policy scam has not moved forward much since the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) completed its probe.

There have been 25 adjournments in the last 10 months, and the case is stuck at the stage of scrutiny of documents. Close to 14 months have passed since former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal was arrested in relation to the case.

On Friday, D P Singh, Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) who represented CBI, told Special Judge Dig Vinay Singh of Rouse Avenue Court: “Enough is enough, my lord… the accused are trying to delay the trial.”

Delhi HC to hear pleas by Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia in liquor ‘scam’

The Delhi High Court will hear petitions by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia against the trial court’s decision to take cognisance of the Enforcement Directorate’s charge sheet filed in alleged excise policy scam today.

Besides seeking to set aside the trial court’s order, Kejriwal has also sought quashing of all proceedings in the case.
