On the first days of its intense drive, the department impounded 50 overaged vehicles (both petrol and diesel) plying in public. (FILE) The Delhi transport department Wednesday (March 29) kicked off a drive to send overage vehicles directly for scrapping. Delhi at present has around 53 lakh such vehicles, said officials.
Under the new initiative, overaged vehicles will be impounded and directly sent to scrapping yards if they are found plying on city roads or parked in public places.
Following the orders of National Green Tribunal (NGT) and the Supreme Court, the department had last year issued a notification that all the overaged petrol and diesel vehicles would be deregistered. Officials said that the move is aimed at encouraging vehicle owners in Delhi to come forward and scrap their vehicles. So far, a total of 53,78,514 diesel/petrol vehicles which have completed their life have been deregistered. Of these total vehicles, 80,000 are government vehicles.
On the first days of its intense drive, the department impounded 50 overaged vehicles (both petrol and diesel) plying in public.
“Today, ten teams of enforcement wing, transport department, impounded 50 vehicles which are more than ten years old (diesel) and 15 years old (petrol) found plying or deemed to be plying (parked in public place) in Civil Lines area and handed over to RVSF (registered vehicle scrapping facility), registered under RVSF Rules-2021, for scrapping,” said the transport department.
Further, the department has also given some options to the owners of all such vehicles to escape the drive and scrapping of their vehicles such as the people can take a no-objection certificate (NOC) for plying in another state subject to condition.
“NOC for diesel vehicles above ten years and petrol vehicles above 15 years will be issued for other states subject to the condition that NOC will not be issued for the places which are identified by the state as a restricted area in terms of order of NGT which had directed the states to identify areas where the dispersion of the air is higher and vehicular density is least,” it said.
Besides, the owners can also get their vehicles converted to electric and ply them in Delhi. However, the retro fitment of such vehicles with empanelled electric kits shall have to be done through agencies approved by the transport department.
Officials said that the empanelment process for electric kits is under process. Further, the public can also get their vehicles scrapped by filling out applications on Voluntary Vehicle Scrapping Application (https://vscrap.parivahan.gov.in) and choosing any of the nearby registered vehicle scrapping facilities as per choice.
