Ministers Ashish Sood (left) and Pankaj Singh address the media on Tuesday (Express/Praveen Khanna)The Delhi government on Tuesday approved extension of its Electric Vehicle (EV) policy by three months and continuation of power subsidy in the Capital.
The Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, did not approve the draft Delhi EV Policy 2.0 proposed by the Transport department and instead recommended changes to the proposal, said officials.
Addressing mediapersons, Transport Minister Pankaj Singh said, “Discussions on the new EV Policy 2.0 are underway. The existing policy will continue to remain in force until the new policy is finalised.” Alleging that delay in disbursing EV subsidies by the previous government has impacted public trust in EV-related incentives, Singh said the BJP government is “committed to addressing these gaps”. The government is yet to disburse Rs 48.36 crore in subsidies to EV owners.
Singh further said that there was no proposal to ban autorickshaws and two-wheelers under the new EV policy. “I assure everyone that all autorickshaws and bikes will continue to operate in Delhi,” he added.
Officials said news reports have been doing the rounds that the department’s EV Policy 2.0 draft called for a ban on new registrations of CNG autorickshaws, and permits for these vehicles not being renewed from August 15. If they were renewed, only e-auto permits would be allowed.
“There are over 1 lakh autorickshaws and two-wheelers in Delhi. It is not feasible to phase them out or push for an immediate shift to EVs.
The reports about banning autos and two-wheelers have caused panic. All of these concerns were discussed in the meeting, and suggestions were made to bring in changes to promote EVs and facilitate a smooth transition from fuel or CNG vehicles to electric,” said an official.
Meanwhile, the Cabinet approved the continuation of all power subsidies for domestic consumers, advocates, farmers, and 1984 riot victims.
Taking on AAP, Power Minister Ashish Sood said, “The Cabinet has approved the continuation of all subsidies. Berozgar netas (jobless leaders) are spreading rumors about subsidies being discontinued daily. But BJP is working for the welfare of the people, and all welfare schemes will continue.”
