Delhi cop rescues elderly woman from smoke-filled building

While most residents in the adjacent building had fled, one woman, a 76-year-old, was trapped on the terrace. Her daughter-in-law, on seeing SHO Kaushik, sought his help.

CopSHO Ramesh Kaushik rushed to the spot and found residents scrambling to safety.

On Sunday around 2 pm, the Roop Nagar Police Station received a PCR call about a fire in a two-storey building in Shakti Nagar. SHO Ramesh Kaushik rushed to the spot and found residents scrambling to safety.

“Two families living in the building that caught fire managed to escape, but the smoke had already begun to spill over into the neighbouring four-floor building,” he said.

While most residents in the adjacent building had fled, one woman, a 76-year-old, was trapped on the terrace. Her daughter-in-law, on seeing SHO Kaushik, sought his help.

“She told us her mother-in-law is diabetic and unable to walk without assistance,” the officer said.

With no time to lose, SHO Kaushik, along with Head Constable Rajneesh and Constable Jitender, entered the smoke-filled building. The building’s lift was non-functioning due to the heat. “We tied handkerchiefs over our faces and made our way up the staircase,” Kaushik said. “It was pitch dark, but we knew we had to get to the fourth floor as quickly as possible.”

When they reached the terrace, the elderly woman was in distress.

Without hesitation, SHO Kaushik picked her up. “The smoke was so thick, we couldn’t see the stairs while getting down… All I kept thinking about was getting her out safely,” said the SHO.

“I thought I was going to die,” the elderly woman later said. “These policemen saved my life. I am so thankful to the Delhi Police for their bravery.”

SHO Kaushik, however, said it was a team effort. “Saving a life is the most important thing in moments like this.”
