Delhi College of Engineering gets Cabinet nod for status upgrade

The Cabinet on Wednesday unanimously passed the Delhi Technological University Bill,2009,paving the way for upgrading the status of the existing Delhi College of Engineering (DCE) to that of a deemed university and being renamed the Delhi Technological University (DTU).

The Cabinet on Wednesday unanimously passed the Delhi Technological University Bill,2009,paving the way for upgrading the status of the existing Delhi College of Engineering (DCE) to that of a deemed university and being renamed the Delhi Technological University (DTU).

The move was taken in accordance with National Knowledge Commission recommendations and is expected to provide a platform for more research and innovation in the DCE.

The faculty of DCE is,however, still unhappy over the move. While Delhi University is known the world over, renaming the DCE will push it into oblivion, they aver.

M P S Mahendro, president of the DCE Teachers’ Association said: “Earlier, the students got a degree from DU. The new development would mean their degree is not be recognised anywhere.”

However,Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said the upgrade would open up opportunities for expansion of technical education in Delhi.

The Cabinet has decided to introduce new BE programmes in software engineering, automotive engineering, electrical and electronic engineering among others.
