According to the police, at around 4 am on Friday, Police Constable Kartar of the Hauz Khas police station was on patrolling duty when he saw three men on a motorcycle. Their descriptions allegedly matched those of suspected burglars in the area.

When Kartar asked the accused to stop, the three allegedly raced their bike, prompting the constable to follow suit, the police said. The 30-minute chase ended at Khel Gaon, when Kartar intercepted the bike. “During the confrontation, they attacked Kartar with iron rods, aiming at his head. His helmet saved him from serious injury,” DCP Chauhan said.

Kartar took out his service pistol to fire a round in the air. As the accused allegedly continued to assault him, he fired again, hitting the leg of one of the suspects. By then, guards at the Asiad village rushed in and helped catch the three accused, the police said.

The accused were identified as Sikander, who was injured in the face-off, Darshan Singh and Vijender Singh. Sikander, 30, has 14 cases against him, the police said, adding that the trio were involved in multiple burglaries in the Malviya Nagar area.

“During interrogation, they revealed that they were doing a recce in the area for committing burglary,” DCP Chauhan added.
