The Public Works Department (PWD) has said that cracks, which showed up on the Defence Colony flyover after a fire engulfed a market situated under it on Friday, are superficial in nature and do not pose any structural safety threat.
The outer surface of the flyover had peeled off due to the fire,PWD engineer-in-chief Rakesh Mishra said, adding that the phenomenon is commonly known as spalling. Though concrete has come off at some places, its just superficial. The fire has not caused any damage to the strength or load-bearing capacity of the structure, Mishra said.
The damage can be corrected and the PWD,which maintains the flyover,is currently assessing the extent of corrosion,he said.
Firefighters had taken about three hours to douse the blaze, which had consumed a cluster of 58 shops situated under the flyover around 3.30 am on Friday. Though they are yet to ascertain the exact cause of the fire,a spot survey suggested that it may have originated from a short-circuit on a nearby electric pole.
It could also have started from inside a shop. These days, electronic equipment such as computers are switched on even when shops are closed, Chief of the Delhi Fire Services A K Sharma said. The wind caused the fire to spread rapidly, engulfing 58 shops before fire tenders could arrive at the spot.
The caller who reported the fire told the police that Mehra Jewellers was the first shop in the market to catch fire. Police said they will begin investigating once fire officials submit a report on the possible causes,a formality that is likely to be completed by Tuesday,Sharma said.
The market, set up in 1976,consists of at least 100 shops clustered together, and officials say shopkeepers may have also violated fire safety norms. Combustible goods such as clothes and tents, which were kept inside the shops, must have also caused the fire to spread rapidly,Sharma added.
