Police said the misuse of e-mails,blogs,etc and putting up defamatory content on the Internet are among the most common ways of seeking revenge. “In most cases, passwords are shared in good faith and when the relationship turns sour, they are used to settle scores and take revenge,” said Vivek Gogia,Additional Commissioner of Police (EOW).

Most victims report such cases after a lapse of a few months, resulting in the loss of crucial data, like log-in details, police said.

police said they are yet to receive a complaint in the case of the sexually explicit MMS clip, involving two students of JNU.

The news of the clip, shot inside one of the hostel rooms surfaced on Monday, forcing the institute to launch an internal inquiry. Police said the clip is more than six months old.

“We have neither received a complaint from the woman nor the university officials,so we have not registered any case,” said H G S Dhaliwal,Deputy Commissioner of Police (South).

The Cyber Crime Cell of the EOW has received as many as 80 complaints of fake profiles on social networking sites. “Most victims (of fake profiles) were in the age group of 18-24 years. These are the cases where we registered an FIR. There are several instances where people do not even lodge a complaint,” said Gogia.
