A day after a staffer was shot dead by a motorist at the Kherki Dhaula toll plaza on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway, police are yet to nab the assailant. Meanwhile, officers have claimed that DSC Limited, the agency in charge of running the toll gate, made several errors in judgement while handling the situation.
The police have accused the agency of installing substandard CCTV cameras at the gate, besides destroying potentially crucial evidence. Senior officers pointed out that the body of toll collector Umesh Kant Pandey was removed from the spot minutes after the incident, and another staffer took his place on the counter. This resulted in the loss of crucial evidence.
Even the CCTV camera installed outside the toll gate could not get a clear picture of the Boleros licence plate on account of its bright headlight,an officer said. They also pointed out that the licence plates of cars passing through the toll gate were not taken down on a regular basis.
Commissioner of Police S S Deswal, accompanied by other senior police officers and DSC officials, visited the Kherki Dhaula toll gate on Saturday. We are focussing on gathering clues. There were no eyewitnesses, and the CCTV footage has not been able to tell us much. This is negligence on the part of the company, said Deswal.
Meanwhile, sources said Pandey may have survived if he had pressed the panic button inside the booth. As per their training, toll operators are advised to inform supervisors about any misbehaviour on the part of commuters. The victim failed to inform the supervisor, even though the accused waited at the gate for over a minute.
Police are also investigating whether Pandey was shot by a co-passenger,and not the Bolero driver.
