“He was the youngest of four brothers… the weight of the bier was heavier than a mountain.” For the family of Dinesh Sharma, who was killed along with his wife, Jyoti, and son, Rudra, in an accident in Gautam Budh Nagar last week, the loss is irreparable.
Sitting in a one-floor house in Bulandshahr’s Azampur Dariyarpur village, his brother Yogesh (49) said: “Rudra was born seven years after my brother got married. Two years later, however, he was diagnosed with kidney disease. But my brother didn’t lose heart. Whatever he earned, he spent on ensuring his son was healthy… his world revolved around him. I never thought it would end like this.”
Dinesh (38) was on his way to a relative’s home, along with his family, when a truck hit their motorcycle from behind on NH-91 on Monday. He and his son died on the spot. His 36-year-old wife was rushed to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital, where she died two hours later. The family lived in Haldoni village in Greater Noida. Dinesh was a line worker at a factory in Phase 2.
Yogesh added, “An entire family has been wiped out. The irony is on that day, Dinesh and his family were going to attend a terahvi programme of a relative in Ghaziabad…”
Sitting in a corner, his elder brother Yogendra watched a video of a boy in a green T-shirt dancing on a bed. “He is our Rudra,” he said. “An hour before the incident, his mother sent me this video… Watching it makes me feel like nothing has happened. Dinesh had a big dream; he wanted to provide an excellent education to his son, he worked overtime, took out a loan for the child’s treatment.”
Dinesh’s mother, Angoori Devi, has not stopped crying since the incident. “They can’t leave me like this. Why am I being made to suffer, at this age?”
Eyewitness, meanwhile, recounted the accident. One of them said, “The truck driver jumped off and fled and the bus dragged the family for a few metres.”
The accused truck driver, Badaun resident Rohtash Yadav (27), has been arrested. Police registered a case under IPC sections including rash driving, causing death by negligence.
