A 40-year-old rickshaw-puller was on Sunday beaten up by a policeman deployed as part of security arrangements for Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

Policemen had been deployed to secure the route as Hooda’s cavalcade passed through Old Gurgaon. He was on his way to a function organised by Haryana Sports Minister Sukhbir Kataria.

Sanjay Sahu suffered a deep cut near his left eye. After being thrashed, he was left on the roadside.

Sahu told Newsline that he was riding his rickshaw near Sector-4/7 chowk close to Sadar Bazaar market in Old Gurgaon when the traffic policeman stopped him.
“He was very rude and angry. I stopped immediately,” Sahu said, adding that he heard policemen saying that “CM aa rahe hain, CM aa rahe hain”.

“Just as I pushed my rickshaw a few metres along with others to stay away from the road, the traffic policeman screamed at me and hit me on my face with a stick. He also slapped me. I fell on the ground. When I tried to get up, the left side of my face had swollen and I was bleeding. There was blood on my hands and clothes,” Sahu said.

He alleged that a local PCR van parked nearby turned him away when he approached them and complained about the traffic policeman.

A few volunteers of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), whose headquarters is located across the road where the incident took place, took Sahu to the party’s office and offered him water to drink.
He had not even breached security as the chief minister had not arrived by then. The policeman hit him mercilessly. I took him to the Civil Hospital for treatment,” Sagar Yadav, an AAP volunteer, said.
A complaint against the traffic policeman was filed at the police station in Sector 5 on Sunday. Sahu was discharged from hospital on Monday. “No action has been taken against the traffic policeman though,” his brother Shambhu said.
Following a protest by AAP volunteers, the traffic policeman issued an apology. Police said an inquiry had been ordered. “We have ordered a probe but the rickshaw-puller has withdrawn his complaint… The policeman has already apologised for his action,” Alok Mittal, Police Commissioner of Gurgaon, said.
“I will be leaving for my native village in Bihar in a few days,” Sahu said.
