Constable injured in police encounter with wanted criminals in outer Delhi’s Tilak Nagar

A constable was injured during an exchange of fire between a team of police personnel and wanted criminals in outer Delhi’s Tilak Nagar area late on Thursday, officers said.
The encounter took place when acting on a tip-off, a police team was raiding a hideout of people suspected to be involved in an armed robbery — a cellphone and Rs 5,000 in cash from a man at gunpoint on March 21.
Police, who had earlier apprehended another man in a parallel investigation, said they “were gathering social media intel on the illegal arms trade in the area”. “We were hoping to get a hold of people brandishing weapons on social media, and question them about the sellers and others,” an officer said.
As the police team closed in, the criminals attempted to escape. Head constable Vikas and constable Sandeep chased two suspects for about 400 metres when one of them opened fire. As police retaliated in self-defense, he sustained gunshot injuries in the hand and abdomen, officers said.
“Sandeep was immediately taken to the hospital, where he is undergoing treatment,” DCP (outer Delhi) Sachin Sharma, adding that a man, apprehended after the gunfight, allegedly confessed to his involvement in the robbery.
During interrogation, the arrested accused revealed about two of his accomplices in the robbery, following which the authorities traced the men to Tilak Nagar, sources said. The duo was arrested. Police also recovered two country-made pistols and motorcycle from them.
Further legal action and investigation are underway, said police.
