Congress’s Delhi unit to hold job fair today to mark birthday of Rahul Gandhi

Over the past few years, Gandhi has made unemployment a recurring focus in his speeches — linking falling incomes and job scarcity to what he described as a failure of the BJP-led central government.

To mark Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s 55th birthday on Thursday, the party’s Delhi unit and Indian Youth Congress will be jointly organising a mega job fair at Talkatora Stadium — an event that aligns closely with one of Gandhi’s central political themes: unemployment.

Over the past few years, Gandhi has made unemployment a recurring focus in his speeches — linking falling incomes and job scarcity to what he described as a failure of the BJP-led central government.

Thursday’s event seems to be designed to turn his political messaging into an on-ground intervention in the national capital, where the Congress is looking to rebuild its organisational presence.

This job fair, which will run from 10 am to 4 pm, has seen registrations from around 20,000 unemployed youth, according to Delhi Congress President Devender Yadav. Nearly 100 companies are expected to participate in the event, with recruiters offering approximately 5,000 vacancies. Companies listed on the party’s promotional material include Zepto, Airtel, Blinkit, Tata, HDFC Bank, Flipkart, Mahindra, and Axis Bank.

“This initiative is a direct reflection of Rahul Gandhi’s concern for the country’s youth,” Yadav said. “He has constantly raised the issue of unemployment in Parliament and during public meetings, highlighting how the government’s promises have not translated into jobs.”

In a press conference ahead of the event, Yadav blamed successive governments — both at the Centre and in Delhi — for what he described as the Capital’s deepening unemployment crisis. “There was a time when young people from all over the country would come to Delhi in search of jobs and find gainful employment,” he said. “But now, the youth of Delhi are battling one of the worst unemployment crises in the past 45 years.”

“The previous AAP government did nothing to provide jobs to the youth during 11 years in power, and the Rekha Gupta government of the BJP has only made promises without delivering jobs in the past 100 days,” he alleged.

Youth Congress President Uday Bhanu Chib, who is overseeing the execution of the event, said youth with at least a Class XII qualification are eligible to participate. Of the 20,000 registrations, 10,000 came through online platforms, while the rest were collected through 258 block-level camps set up by the Delhi Congress unit.

Congress leaders also cited a similar initiative in Rajasthan in April, where they claimed that 1,400 out of 3,500 registered youth had received job offers. Party officials said the Rajasthan job fair served as a “morale booster” and influenced them to organise a larger event on Gandhi’s birthday.

Slamming the Congress’s initiative, BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor dubbed the party’s claim of registering 20,000 youth as “laughable”.
