Cong,BJP sing same poll tune: Low-cost houses to urban poor

Cong claims 50,000 low-cost homes will be allotted in five months; BJP says it will provide a flat to every family living in JJ clusters

Congress and Opposition BJP held massive rallies in Delhi ahead of Assembly elections slated for later this year. Both parties made promises of allotting flats to people in the low-income group.

This was Delhi BJP election in-charge Nitin Gadkari’s first rally. “When Delhi was ruled by BJP,the prices of commodities were under control. If you vote us back to power, those days can return. CM Sheila Dikshit says she has developed Delhi in the last 15 years, but I don’t think people have benefited from this so-called development,” Gadkari said, addressing a jhuggi-jhopri sammelan in Talkatora Stadium on Sunday.

BJP announced that it would provide flats to every family that is living in JJ clusters in the city. These flats would be developed under the public-private-partnership mode. “I assure you that each JJ cluster resident will be given a flat at the very place they are living in,when BJP comes to power,” Delhi BJP president Vijay Goel said.

Addressing a political rally in Rohini Sector-21,Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said the Delhi government was getting ready to allot around 50,000 low-cost houses in the next five months. The houses would be allotted to eligible registered urban poor families and residents of JJ clusters. “The flats would be provided to scheduled caste families for free, whereas other eligible families would be given a loan in order to meet their contribution,” she said.

“The government, which has been in the service of people for the last 15 years, has always strived hard to reach all sections in order to provide a helping hand to deserving families,” she said.

According to Congress, the rally was organised to convey gratitude for regularisation of unauthorised colonies, initiating development works in such colonies, and fast development in rural Delhi. “The main opposition in Delhi has been making unbelievable promises. Their intention is to mislead people with an aim to harvest political gains,” Dikshit said.

Dikshit said large-scale distribution of highly subsidised food to eligible families under the Food Security Scheme would not affect the farmers’ procurement prices.
