With plans afoot of setting up infrastructure for pedestrians and non-motorised forms of transport like cycling,the city government is looking at more and more ways to urge residents to use public transport instead of private vehicles.

* The total number of daily trips made by commuters in the city through various methods of transport — walking,taking their cars,cycling,using the Delhi Metro,or buses (DTC/Blueline) — is 2,31,12,555. The number is expected to notch up to 3,36,00,000 by 2021.

* In 2007,the number of trips made by commuters in cars and other private vehicles was 18,55,655. Despite the expansion of the DTC fleet,the government expects this number to go up to 26,97,668 by 2021.

* Delhi currently has about 60 lakh registered cars. Nearly 8 lakh cars come to the city from nearby satellite cities.

* While car trips form about 8 per cent of the trips made by commuters every day in the city,pedestrians claim the maximum – 34 per cent. In 2007,walkers made a total of 79,31,955 trips in a day. The number is expected to go up to 1,15,31,122 by 2021.

* There has been a 132 per cent increase in the number of cars over the last decade.

* Cyclists at present make daily trips numbering about 10,02,986 trips. This is expected to rise to about 14,58,096 by 2021.

* In 2007,the 43,34,113 trips bus commuters made constituted about 18.8 per cent of the total trips made,which is expected to rise to 63,00,740 by the estimates for 2021.

* While the Delhi Metro covers over 120 km in the city at present,in 2007,commuters were making 5,50,641 trips covering about 2.4 per cent trips made in the city everyday. By 2021,the Delhi Metro is expected to spread over 413.8 km and the number of trips will rise to 8,00,497. By the completion of the second phase,Delhi Metro will cover 189 km.

* Currently,nearly 64 per cent of daily trips are made through public transport.

* The total number of buses in Delhi is about 3,500. The government is expecting about 2,500 low-floor buses to be added to the fleet by the Commonwealth Games. There are 5,000 bus stops and 2,700 proper bus queue shelters.
