Charges against Sajjan deferred again

A City court has once again deferred the formal framing of charges against Sajjan Kumar in the 1984 riot case involving the death of five persons in Delhi Cantonment area.

A City court has once again deferred the formal framing of charges against Sajjan Kumar in the 1984 riot case involving the death of five persons in Delhi Cantonment area. Additional Sessions Judge Sunita Gupta gave the CBI counsel a day to file a list of witnesses’ and their statements which would be referred to during the arguments.

Earlier, initiating arguments,CBI counsel D K Singh charged Kumar,a former Congress MP,with leading a rioting mob on motorcycles. Things heated up when Singh referred to a place in a site plan of the riot area from where Kumar allegedly addressed the crowd during the riots.

Kumar’s counsel,I U Khan and A K Sharma, got up and protested vociferously. “Do you have the statement of any witness to support your contention? You cannot say anything before the court at your convenience,” Kumar’s defence countered, prompting the judge to intervene. Judge Gupta kept looking at Kumar’s counsel and repeated,“Sharmaji,ye kya ho raha hai (What are you doing)?”

During the arguments, which lasted almost 30 minutes, the CBI counsel read out a statement of the prosecution witness and complainant Joginder Singh, who alleged that his brother Surjeet Singh had been killed by the rioting mob after being dragged from their house.

The defence counsel again submitted before the court that Singh was trying to mislead the court and Khan told Singh that since he was new at the case, they would assist him with the background.

In the end,the court gave CBI counsel a day’s time to get the lists of witnesses and his other requirements for the case.
