The Union government has approved a project to convert a nearly 50-km single-lane stretch of the Nuh-Alwar highway into a four-lane road, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Tuesday.

The project – estimated to cost Rs 480.44 crore — concerns National Highway 248-A, specifically the Gurugram-Alwar Road section spanning 49.02 km. It includes the construction of a four-lane highway from Nuh to Firozpur Jhirka, up to the Rajasthan border, alongside upgrading an existing 6.84-km stretch in the villages of Malab and Bhadas in Nuh district.

On November 3, 2008, then Union minister S Jaipal Reddy laid the foundation for the four-lane road project.

In a post on X, Gadkari said, “This national highway section connects Gurugram, Sohna, and Nuh industrial areas. Due to the movement of heavy vehicles from Rajasthan to northern states, there is heavy traffic on this route. Making this section four-lane will reduce heavy traffic and provide better connectivity, which will promote economic development in this area.”

The current single-lane road has been a bottleneck, claiming around 3,000 lives over the last 12 years, sources claimed.

Nuh Congress MLA Aftab Ahmed on Tuesday claimed it was the UPA government that had initiated works to convert route 248A into a national highway in 2014. “But the BJP governments at the Centre and the state dropped this four-laning project in 2018 saying that the upcoming Delhi-Mumbai Expressway will take care of the needs of the people,” he added.

The Congress had raised the issue repeatedly in the Haryana Assembly, Ahmed said, adding that he had written to the ministry in December about the Nuh-Firozpur stretch.

Ahmed, meanwhile, added that he met the Union Road Transport Secretary on Monday regarding several road projects about which he had previously written to Gadkari. These included demands for building inter-changes on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway’s Ujina and Punhana stretches and a new bypass for Nuh city. “The meeting was positive as the demands are justified,” he said.
