Two children reportedly died after drinking contaminated water from a borewell in Fatehpur Beri,Chattarpur on Friday evening. The police said the two children — Jaawed (14) and Ashiq (9) — were among 30 residents from the area who complained of sickness and nausea on Thursday night after drinking water from a private borewell. They were admitted to AIIMS,Safdarjung Hospital and Mission Charities Hospital. Being a cluster of unauthorised colonies,the area does not have a regular supply of water from the DJB.

Security guard arrested for neighbour’s rape

A 60-year-old security guard was arrested for allegedly raping his neighbour’s wife in Southwest Delhi. Ram Phiran,a resident of Shahbad Mohammadpur,allegedly raped his colleague’s 20-year-old wife at her house when her husband was away at work on Thursday afternoon,a police officer said. The woman and her husband owed Phiran around Rs 8,000. The husband had called Phiran at his residence in the evening to collect the money but he came in the afternoon and allegedly raped the woman finding her alone at home,the police said. A medical examination of the victim at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital has confirmed the rape.

Student falls off hostel floor,dies

A 23-year old student died after reportedly falling off the fifth floor of his hostel building. According to the Ghaziabad police,the body of Saurabh Satchan of Kanpur,a second-year student of BJ College of Pharmacy near Modinagar,was discovered around 8.30 pm. He was taken to Lokpriya Hospital,where he was declared dead on arrival. While the police suspect it to be a suicide case,the college authorities said it was an accident.

Committed to helping elderly: CM

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said her government is committed to providing all possible help to senior citizens in the city. Inaugurating a workshop on ‘Empowering Elderly People’ on Friday,she said her government has been running a number of schemes to benefit senior citizens. The government has constituted a Senior Citizens’ Council to monitor the status of schemes meant for the elderly. The state also offers a monthly pension of Rs 1,000 to Rs 2.5 lakh senior citizens per month. “They must be given due respect by the society. Our government is committed to help them by implementing various schemes,” she said.

Outlet for Tihar products in HC

Products made by Tihar Jail convicts will now be sold in the Delhi High Court premises. Acting Chief Justice Madan B Lokur inaugurated one such outlet on Friday. Jail authorities have also decided to market products like rugs,decorative items,mustard oil and shirts in the outlet under the brand name ‘TJ’.

Municipal polls on April 28

The Delhi Election Commission has notified the schedule for the municipal elections 2010. Polling for the post of mayor and deputy mayor and vacancies in the Standing Committee will take place on April 28. Nominations can be filed till April 23. The names of councillor Jagdish Magmain,Leader of MCD House Subhash Arya and present Mayor Kanwar Sain have been doing the rounds from the BJP quarters for the post of the Mayor.
