Cabinet puts full stop on illegal colonies

Even as the Delhi government continues to struggle with regularising 1,639 unauthorised colonies in the city, the Cabinet on Monday decided to take strict action against illegal construction on agricultural land.

Even as the Delhi government continues to struggle with regularising 1,639 unauthorised colonies in the city, the Cabinet on Monday decided to take strict action against illegal construction on agricultural land. Urban Development Minister A K Walia said this is meant to curb the mushrooming of unauthorised colonies in the Capital.

“We have also decided to take strict action against officers who fail to check unauthorised constructions,” Walia said, adding that the new policy is in line with Lieutenant-Governor Tejendra Khanna’s decision to constitute a committee of officials including deputy commissioners from the Revenue department, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD),the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and the Deputy Commissioners of Police to curb the growth of illegal colonies.

“It is time to send across a message that not even a single new unauthorised colony will be allowed,in any way,to come up in the city,” Walia said.

Last week, the L-G’s office had reportedly instructed the DDA to take action against illegal construction in Brijwasan,Narela and Bawana, said an official in the Urban Development department. “There have been reports of land in these areas being sold as small plots. This is how unauthorised colonies come up in the first place,” the official added.

According to the officials, between 1977 — the year in which the government regularised all existing colonies — and 2010,over 1,639 illegal colonies came up in the Capital. In 1994,the then BJP government prepared a list of 1,071 unauthorised colonies for regularisation. By the Assembly elections in 2008,this list had bloated to 1,639.

So far the government has received the layout plans for only 600 colonies for regularisation. The rest are yet to get clearance from the Forest department, the DDA and the municipal agencies.
