The woman was allegedly raped on March 12 after she was molested by a housekeeping staff of the same facility, while she was on a trip to India, the police have saidIn January, a 25-year-old man struck up a conversation with a 36-year-old British national on Instagram Threads.
The two became friends and they exchanged messages over the next few months — he relied on Google Translate to talk to her — said officers in the Delhi Police.
Three months later, the woman decided to visit India and arrived in the national capital in March. She booked a hotel in Mahipalpur to meet the man, thinking it would be a friendly visit.
Instead, he allegedly raped her at the hotel, said police.
The accused, Kailash, a resident of Harijan Basti in Vasundhara Enclave area of Delhi, was later arrested, said police. He worked as a labourer at a glass shop.
A chargesheet in the case is learnt to have been filed by the police on May 22 in the court of Aniket Singh in Patiala House Court.
According to a police officer, the woman said she had booked the hotel; she thought it was going to be a meeting between friends. “The victim stated that she came in contact with the primary accused through Instagram Threads in January, and they became friends. On March 7, she came to India for a trip… she visited Goa and stayed there till March 11. She asked him (Kailash) to come to Goa, but he couldn’t. But she wanted to meet him, so she booked the hotel in Delhi’s Mahipalpur. There, he (Kailash) allegedly forced himself upon her,” the officer said.
The woman had further alleged that a housekeeping staff member at the hotel touched her inappropriately, the officer added.
Following Kailash’s arrest, police said they questioned him and he admitted that he and the woman became friends through Instagram.
“The prime accused works as a labourer at a glass shop in Mahipalpur. Looking at the chat records between him and the woman, it appears they had been in contact through the social media platform since January and communicated in a friendly manner,” said the officer.
“He also admitted that their ‘physical relationship’ occurred under the influence of alcohol,” the officer added.
As for the housekeeping staff, police had identified him as Gulfaam and arrested him as well
