The Delhi Police are probing tampering of evidence and negligence after a 35-year-old worker died after falling from scaffolding while carrying out maintenance work at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport on September 5.

Meanwhile, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) stated that the worker, who was employed by a third-party contractor, had violated safety protocols and that the contractor had provided financial assistance to his family. Sources said DIAL has denied charges of evidence tampering or negligence.

According to the First Information Report (FIR) registered at IGI Airport Police Station, the incident took place around 4.30 pm on September 5 in the apron area near Terminal 3. The worker, identified as Sukhdev Sharma, a resident of Gonda district in Uttar Pradesh, reportedly fell from a height of around 10 feet while working on scaffolding

The police said Sharma sustained severe head injuries, and was taken to Parameshwari Devi Hospital, where doctors declared him “dead on arrival”. The FIR said Sharma was unconscious when brought to the hospital, and that attempts to revive him failed.

The police said they received a PCR call about the incident at 6.20 pm, following which a team reached the spot. Crime team officials and forensic experts also inspected the site.

“There were some blood stains seen between the scaffolding, which looked like they had been attempted to clean with water. The area near it was also wet with water,” the FIR said.

The police have registered a case for causing death by negligence, and causing the disappearance of evidence or giving false information to screen an offender. “We have registered a case, and investigation is underway,” said Vichitra Veer, Deputy Commissioner of Police (IGI Airport).

A DIAL spokesperson stated that the worker was employed by a third-party contractor appointed by the airport operator to perform specific construction work at the airside.

“Initial inquiry suggests that he fell from a height on 5th September 2025 while not adhering to prescribed safety protocols. He was rushed to the hospital immediately, but despite the best efforts, he could not survive. A police case has been lodged by the contractor, and the matter is currently under investigation,” the spokesperson said.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to the bereaved family during this difficult time. We understand that the contractor has extended financial aid to the family, and we remain in close touch to ensure necessary support,” the spokesperson added.

According to sources, the worker was “trying to take a shortcut when he fell”. “By the time airport authorities were told about the accident and we reached the spot, he had already been taken to the hospital,” a source said.

“When the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and Delhi Police were investigating the accident, they collected blood samples and even confiscated a vehicle. Even the contractor was told to stop work while the investigation was ongoing. But, they have allowed the contractor to start work now, which means there was no tampering of evidence,” the source added.
