Defying prohibitory orders, more than a thousand Bhartiya Janata Party workers on Sunday marched towards Prime Minister Manmohan Singhs residence on 7 Race Course Road, demanding proper investigation into the allegation of corruption against Congress leaders and the PMs resignation over the Railways bribery case and the coal blocks allocation controversy.
BJPs youth wing president Anurag Thakur and head of the partys Delhi unit Vijay Goel led the protest. The party workers, holding placards and shouting slogans against the ruling government, managed to break two barricades and marched towards PMs residence, before they were finally stopped 200 metres away.
As the clash between the party workers and security personnel worsened, police resorted to the use of water cannons to disperse the crowd. Besides local police,a team of Rapid Action Force personnel was put on standby to deal with any untoward situation.
More than 200 BJP workers were detained and taken to Tughlaq Road police station, and released later in the day. The race course metro station also remained closed since 11 am.
Addressing the protesters,Goel thanked them for taking part in the demonstration. This loot and scoot policy of the UPA government, headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, has led to an outrage among the common people, he said.
Goel said,The Prime Minister is guilty of both acts of omission and commission. He was heading the Coal Ministry when there were discrepancies in coal blocks allocation. He tried to protect Ashwini Kumar, the former Law Minister, whose role in tampering the coal allocation report is under scanner. He also tried to protect the former Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal, whose close relatives were auctioned posts in the Railways Ministry for crores of rupees.
Anurag Thakur told reporters that the party would hold protests in 275 districts.
BJP President Rajnath Singh on Saturday announced that the BJP would hold a nationwide protest to expose corruption in the government.
