Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress on Wednesday declared their candidates for the posts of Mayor,Deputy Mayor of the South Corporation and for the three vacancies in the Standing Committee. The election for these posts will be held on April 16.
BJPs Sarita Choudhary,who is close to MLA Ramesh Bidhuri,will be competing for the post of Mayor with first time councillor Abhishek Dutt from the Congress. Pramila Tokas,an independent councillor from Munirka ward,has also filed a nomination for the same post.
For the post of Deputy Mayor,BJP has fielded BSP councillor Sahi Ram whereas Congress has fielded Praveen Rana. Independent councillor Satendra Singh Rana is also in the race for deputy Mayor.
For the three posts in the Standing Committee,Congress councillors Nutan Kochar and Satish Gupta will compete against Rajesh Gehlot,Satender Prakash and Subhash Arya of BJP. Independent candidate Indu Sharma is also in race for the standing committee posts.
In last election,BJP did not have a majority and took support of BSP and independent councillors to form the South corporation. Of the 104 wards in the corporation,BJP has 44 members and enjoys support of six BSP coucillors,one JDU and three INLD councillors,besides 14 independents. Congress has 29 members and is supported by 14 councillors from NCP and one each from RLD and SP.
