A security alert was issued in Delhi and NCR region ahead of Republic Day after an ITBP Inspector General’s SUV, with blue beacon atop, was stolen from outside his rented house in Noida in the early hours of Wednesday.
The vehicle, a white Tata Safari, was stolen at about 3.48 am Wednesday from a gated colony in Noida Sector 23, said police. The vehicle was allotted to Anand Swarup, IG (Provisioning) of the Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Force. Swarup’s driver had parked the vehicle on the colony road and not inside the premises of his residence, said the police.
Noida police alerted neighbouring states about the theft. Delhi Police too were tasked with tracking down the vehicle. “In the wake of recent Pathankot attack, and Republic Day, additional precautionary measures are being taken,” said a Delhi Police official.
Swarup, a 1992-batch Indian Police Service officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre, said he came to know of the theft in the morning. “I immediately made a PCR call and informed the Noida Police. Yesterday (Tuesday), I came back from an NIA (National Investigation Agency) function in Delhi and my driver parked the vehicle outside the house and left,” he told The Indian Express. “I have recently got a transfer to ITBP headquarters in CGO (Central Government Offices) complex. I am staying here in a rented accommodation till I get the house in Delhi.” He added, “Police are probing the matter and I am giving them full cooperation.”
Police are scanning CCTV footage from the colony and questioning guards. “Preliminary investigation of the footage shows there were two to three people who stole the vehicle,” said a senior officer. The vehicle, with a high-security Chandigarh registration plate, was bought a few months ago. It had been sent to a service centre last week. “We are questioning employees at the service centre too,” added the officer.
Anoop Singh, Circle Officer, Noida City, said, “All angles are being investigated. A case of theft has been lodged in Noida Sector 24 police station. The car did not have any official stickers or documents.”
The ITBP has instituted an inquiry into the incident. Swarup was transferred from Mussoorie and posted in Delhi a few months ago.
