The police had earlier said the accused had data on patients and potential customers as they worked with someone at a telecommunications company.

“The fake and adulterated medicines led to serious issues for some patients. The marketing company received several complaints. They alleged their customers lost more than Rs 2 crore,” said an officer.

Several bank accounts were scanned and courier companies were contacted to trace the addresses of the accused. Initially, three call centres were found in Swaroop Nagar (Delhi), Indira Nagar (Lucknow) and Jankipuram (Lucknow). The police arrested 10 gang members from the two cities and seized boxes of adulterated medicines.

Further investigation revealed that the accused had two more call centres – at Pooth Kalan (Delhi) and Indira Nagar (Lucknow)- and two others who helped run these were arrested.

Prashant Gautam, DCP (Special Cell), said, “We conducted raids simultaneously in Delhi and Lucknow. The accused would offer huge discounts on diabetes, blood pressure and orthopaedic medicines. We checked their records and found that in the last year, they sold medicines worth Rs 1 crore across the country. They made medicines using cheap chemicals.”

“We have seized their MG Hector and blocked all the five call centres along with the properties in Delhi and Lucknow. We are looking for the adulterated medicine suppliers and investigating the matter,” the DCP added.
