A 62-year-old man was severed in half while trying to board a running train at New Delhi Railway Station on Tuesday morning.
According to police officers, the incident occurred on Platform 14, which, incidentally, was the site of a stampede that left 18 dead three weeks ago.
Railway officials said the man was identified as Tilak Raj, a resident of Tehsil Camp in Panipat, Haryana. The accident took place when he was trying to board the Shan-e-Punjab Express (Train No. 12497), which runs from New Delhi to Amritsar, said officials. The train had departed from New Delhi at 6.40 am and had almost entirely moved out of the platform area when the mishap occurred.
On reaching the scene, police found that the man had suffered severe injuries, with both legs severed and lying between the tracks, while the rest of his body was outside the rail track.
“A mobile phone was recovered from the deceased’s pocket. After some time, a call was received on the phone, through which the deceased was identified… His son, Tarun, along with relatives, arrived at the police station, and inquest proceedings under BNSS Section 174 were conducted,” said DCP Railways, K P S Malhotra.
After recording statements from the family, a post-mortem examination was carried out at Lady Hardinge Medical College. The deceased’s body was then handed over to his son, said police
