Battling the extreme heat,Delhiites are trying every measure to cool off. It is evident with the power demand,at 4,581 MW on Monday, setting the record of being the highest ever in the Capital.

The demand hit the peak at 2.52 pm on Monday and according to officials,it was successfully met with. Instances of load-shedding were minimal, they added.

Till now,the highest power demand stood at 4,408 MW on July 8,2009.

“This year,we have already seen a 10.7 per cent increase in demand in May as compared to last year,” an official with a power distribution company (discom) said.

A study of the peak demand recorded in Delhi over the last 50 years is an interesting display of how consumption patterns have changed over the years. Consider this: the peak demand recorded in the Capital in 1951 was a mere 27 MW. By 1961,it had jumped to 86 MW,an astronomical figure in those days.

“After 2009,we ensured that our power arrangements this year are sufficient. So far,we have not had any major problem in dealing with the demand levels in Delhi,” the official said.

There are chances, however, that as summer progresses the demand too may rise. “Yes,we do expect the demand to rise in June and July, perhaps past 4,600 MW,” the official added.
