A picture of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, a pamphlet with instructions on how they can partake in the celebrations despite not being a part of the temple’s consecration ceremony on January 22, and a small packet of rice — across Delhi, several housing societies have received a package containing these three items.

This is part of efforts by the RSS as well as the BJP to reach out to at least 60 crore households across India ahead of the ceremony.

According to Delhi BJP media head Praveen Kapoor, the outreach is mainly being spearheaded by the RSS and being supported by the BJP. He also said BJP offices across the capital will be screening the ceremony. People have also been encouraged to watch the ceremony at RSS-organised public screenings.

Kapoor added that the pamphlets instruct people to visit nearby temples on the day of the consecration and offer prayers.

Those part of the door-to-door campaign also encouraged people to light at least five diyas in their homes, make rangolis, and conduct an aarti at 12.40 pm.

The postcard-sized picture of the temple given to residents has the deity’s face emblazoned across it, looking down benevolently at the temple while the pamphlets outline the temple’s dimensions. The latter are also accompanied by small, token bags of rice called pujit akshat, which are generally used for Hindu rituals.

Meanwhile, reactions across residential societies have been mixed. In W-1 Desu Road Colony in Mehrauli, the RWA was enthusiastic in its response. “We will buy laddoos and distribute them in the society. We have also planned a screening of the event and an aarti,” said Sharad Vashisht, who is part of the colony’s RWA.

In Sarita Vihar’s Pocket L, the RWA refused to be a part of the activities.

“Few residents have taken the onus to distribute the pamphlets but as an RWA, we are not partaking in any activity,” said an RWA member, who did not wish to be named.

Residents in Sarita Vihar’s Pocket C and New Friends Colony were unaware of the pamphlets being distributed.

Maharaj Singh Verma, who lives in New Friends Colony, said that while he hasn’t noticed any pamphlet distribution, his society’s RWA is currently taking suggestions from residents on how to appropriately celebrate the consecration.

In Pocket C, some residents have organised a rath yatra from a local Ram temple to celebrate “500 years of continuous struggle and intense waiting”.
