Slums near Nizamuddin being cleared for Games
The Delhi Development Authority on Wednesday began demolition of slum clusters near the Hazrat Nizamuddin bridge and on the Yamuna flood plain. The area,in the proximity of the Games Village, is being cleared ahead of the Games. But activists say that this will lead to the dispossession of several people from the Yamuna floodplain. An informal school,run by a social worker,might also get closed.
L-G inspects Games Village again
After visiting the Games Village last month,L-G Tejendra Khanna visited the site again to check the progress made,particularly the location in front of the Village where a polyclinic,the CGF car parking and 1.8 hectare of green area are slated to come up. Khanna asked the contractors to set a deadline of July 20 for the completion of plantation and said he would again visit the site on July 20 to make sure it was done. Khanna also visited the Yamuna Sports Complex.
262 pc increase in stamp duty collection
With the increase in circle rates to be notified soon and Delhiites rushing to register their properties,the government has started reaping revenue benefits. There has been a 262-per cent increase in stamp duty collections in the first quarter of this financial year. In this quarter the government has collected Rs 532.49 crore as against Rs 202.94 crore collected in the same period in 2009-10. The collection has been highest in June.
Dutch rape case: Court notice to Delhi Police
The Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued a notice to the Delhi Police while hearing a bail application of a Kashmiri youth accused of raping a Dutch woman. Yasir Altafs bail was rejected by a trial court last week on the grounds that the investigation was at the initial stages. The youth was arrested after a complaint was lodged at the Connaught Place police station.
