Highlighting the need to protect Aravalli Hills from illegal mining,the Punjab and Haryana High Court has dismissed a petition filed by Faridabad Gurgaon Minerals Limited. The Bench of Justice Ranjit Singh reproached “greed” shown by the company to indulge in illegal mining. Terming the company’s conduct “unfair,unreasonable and,to an extent,absurd”,Justice Singh slapped a penalty of Rs 50,000 for filing “frivolous” petition. The Supreme Court had banned mining to protect the ecologically fragile Aravallis.

Sugar,onions for less
New Delhi: National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) on Tuesday said it will sell sugar at Rs 41 per kg and onion at Rs 16 per kg in Delhi. While sale of sugar will start next week,onions at cheaper rates started selling on Tuesday at NAFED’s five outlets and 10 ‘NAFED Vahinis’. NAFED would also supply select items — arhar dal,moong,urad,parmal rice and edible oil among others — at 30 per cent less than market rate from Friday.
