Former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh, who is admitted in AIIMS for problems with his transplanted kidney, had a surprise visitor on Sunday — actor Amitabh Bachchan and his daughter Shweta Nanda.

The two-hour-long visit is the second meeting between Singh and Bachchan since the former quit Samajwadi Party.

Bachchan and Nanda arrived at AIIMS around noon, straight from the airport. They were immediately taken to room 301 in the private VIP ward, where Singh has been admitted since September 14.

According to an official from AIIMS,“It was a very emotional meeting, since the two met after a long time. Amitabh sat on a chair near the bed, while Shweta and Amar Singh’s wife sat in the sofa. Amar Singh became very emotional, and he even brushed away a few tears.”

Bachchan reportedly asked Singh about his health and if he he “felt weak”.

“Singh lay on his bed the entire time and Bachchan stroked his head and held his hand for a while,” the official added.

The two reportedly had a “light lunch” in the hospital.

After spending an hour and half with Singh,Bachchan met the doctors monitoring the political leader for around 20 minutes. Bachchan is in Delhi for the Jnanpith Award ceremony.

Dodging a crowd that had swelled to three times its size while the superstar and his daughter were in Singh’s room, the two drove away without making any public statement.

Singh, who has been granted interim bail till Monday on health grounds in connection with cash-for-votes scam, has been diagnosed with urinary tract infection and has high serum creatinine levels in his blood samples. Creatinine is an indicator of kidney function and it was fluctuating between 1.2 to 1.6 mg/dl in Singh’s samples.

Singh also had diarrhea, which contributed to the deteriorating function of his grafted kidney. He also has a history of diabetes and suffers from “high anxiety levels” contributing to tachycardia (irregular heart beats). A psychiatrist has also been monitoring his condition.
