Police in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh district booked three people on Wednesday for allegedly assaulting a 15-year-old Muslim boy, forcing him to urinate on a Pakistani flag, and abusing the Muslim community.

According to the police, the FIR was registered at the Banna Devi police station under sections 191(2) (rioting), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 352 (provoke breach of peace), 351(2) (criminal intimidation) and 353(2)(circulating false information) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against Raju, a book shop owner; Nitin, a grocery shop owner; and an unidentified man.

The FIR was registered after the 15-year-old boy was allegedly assaulted and forced to urinate on a Pakistan flag by a group of men after he picked up the flag, which they had kept on the road during a protest against the Pahalgam terrorist attack on Monday, the police said. The incident took place when the Class 9 boy was returning home from school with his friends, they added.

The text under the flag read “Pakistan murdabad”.

In purported videos of the incident, a boy can be seen surrounded by men who ask him to raise slogans of “Hindustan Zindabad” and “Bharat Mata ki Jai”. The men are also seen pushing him and using abusive language. In another video, the boy can be seen putting a flag on the road and urinating on it.

In his complaint to the police, Abdul Qadir, a resident of Shah Jamal, said a video went viral on social media on Monday in which Raju and Nitin can be seen beating a boy and insulting and abusing the Muslim community.

“This has hurt the sentiments of the Muslim community, which is angered by it. Both these men along with several dozen others have disturbed the peace of the city by roaming around and abusing the Muslim community. They have also beaten up Muslims on the footpath,” Qadri said in his complaint.

Pankaj Kumar Misra, SHO of the Banna Devi police station, said the boy had picked up the flag from the middle of the road. “The group of protesters asked him to put the flag back. They allegedly asked him what he could do in solidarity with the protest and told him to urinate on the flag,” he said.
