ā€œAccording to the woman, the bike rider reached her pickup spot within 15 minutes of booking the ride. When she reached the Simon Bolivar Marg near Buddha Jayanti Park around 11.45 pm, the bike rider tried to change the route even while looking at the map on his phone,Ā which the woman protested against,ā€ a police officer said. ā€œSoon, it started raining heavily and the rider asked the woman to get down and take shelter with him under a tree.ā€

The woman alleged that since the area was secluded, Jaiveer tried to molest her and started pulling her towards him. ā€œThe ordeal went on for a few minutes after which the woman raised an alarm,ā€ the officer said. ā€œA man driving a Scorpio noticed her and pulled up near the spot. He began honking the car horn. Following this, the rider fled in his bike. He was arrested in Gurgaon within 12 hours.ā€

The car driver offered to help the woman and dropped her at a nearby Metro station at her request. The woman then went to her friend’s house in Vasant Kunj. After she narrated the incident, the friend’s mother called up the PCR.

DCP (New Delhi) Devesh Mahla said a case has been lodged under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Section 74 (assaulting or using criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and Section 76 (assaulting or using criminal force to any woman or abetting such act with the intention of disrobing) at Chanakyapuri Police Station.

ā€œAt inDrive, our user safety and satisfaction, specifically women safety and experience, is always a top-most priority and we deeply regret and feel sorry for this incident experienced by our user,ā€ a spokesperson said.

A spokesperson added that the app has a shield icon on the main screen for ā€œquickly contacting support, calling the police or an ambulanceā€.

ā€œIn the app, everyone can save the phone number of a trusted person for quick contact in an emergency. Trusted numbers can be added at any time, even during the ride,ā€ the spokesperson said.
