Undergraduate students at AIIMS suspended their indefinite relay hunger strike early Thursday morning, following assurances from the administration that their demands would be addressed at the earliest.

Undergraduate students at AIIMS suspended their indefinite relay hunger strike early Thursday morning, following assurances from the administration that their demands would be addressed at the earliest.

Students said authorities have given a written assurance to provide free healthcare to the immediate family members of Anil Kumar Meena, the first year MBBS student who allegedly committed suicide at the AIIMS hostel on Sunday.

A member of the UG union said,“They have agreed to some reforms in the institute, including the appointment of senior faculty members as guardians for each student.”

The institute had on Tuesday also reappointed professor Sukhadeo Thorat, former chairperson of the UGC,to evaluate the status of implementation of his 2007 recommendations to help students from reserved categories adjust to the academic environment in the institute.

A group of faculty members has also been appointed to study Anil’s academic records,to check if rules were followed in giving weightage of his internal exam.

The students boycotted internal exams that were to commence last week, and went on an indefinite relay hunger strike, demanding the removal of the director of AIIMS.
